Installation Guidelines

I’ve included below a general guide. For the most accurate and compliant procedures, always consult local building codes and Knauf datasheets.

Preparation & Framing

Check the Substrate/Framing:

  • Ensure all framing—metal studs or timber—is aligned, plumb, and level. Depending on project requirements, spacing between framing members should typically be 400 mm or 600 mm centre-to-centre.

Acclimatise the Boards:

  • Store gypsum boards in a dry, ventilated area. Allow them to acclimatise on-site for at least 24 hours before installation, preventing issues from humidity and temperature variations.

Measuring & Cutting

  • Marking Dimensions: Use a tape measure and straightedge to mark the cut line on the face paper of the board.
  • Scoring & Snapping: Score along the marked line with a utility knife. Snap the board by applying gentle pressure along the scored line, then cut the paper backing.
  • Smooth the Edges: Clean or lightly sand the cut edges for a tight, neat fit.

Fixing to the Frame

  • Positioning the Board: Place the board so that edges land on the centre of framing members for secure fastening. Stagger vertical joints between adjacent boards to minimise cracks.
  • Fastening Method: Use self-drilling drywall screws for metal framing or self-tapping drywall screws for timber studs.
  • Recommended screw length is typically around 25–32 mm (1–1.25 inch) for a 9mm board (verify exact size per manufacturer’s instructions).
  • Screw Spacing & Depth: Place screws every 200–250 mm along the edges and 300 mm in the field of the board. Drive screws so the heads are slightly below the surface without breaking the paper face.

Joint Treatment & Finishing

  • Joint Tape Application: Apply joint compound along the seams. Embed paper or fibreglass joint tape in the compound, pressing firmly to ensure no air pockets.
  • First Coat of Joint Compound: Apply a thin compound layer over the taped joints to fully cover the tape. Feather out the edges for a seamless transition.
  • Second and third Coats (as needed): Let each coat dry completely before applying the next. Extend each subsequent coat more expansively than the previous one to blend into the board surface.
  • Sanding & Surface Prep: Lightly sand any high spots or ridges between coats, not damaging the paper surface. Wipe off the dust thoroughly
  • Priming & Decorating: Apply undercoat paint (primer) on the surface before painting or applying wallpaper. Ensure proper ventilation and follow the paint or wallpaper manufacturer’s instructions for best results.

Additional Tips & Considerations

Edge Types: Knauf 9mm Gypsum Board typically has tapered edges to facilitate smoother jointing. Match board edge profiles for the best-finished result.

Safety Measures:
  1. Wear gloves, protective eyewear, and a dust mask during cutting and sanding.
  2. Use appropriate lifting techniques or mechanical aids, as gypsum boards can be heavy.
  3. Moisture-Prone Areas: If installing in areas with higher humidity (e.g., bathrooms and kitchens), consider using moisture-resistant gypsum board variants rather than standard boards.
  4. Fire Rating Requirements: For areas requiring a fire-rated system, consult Knauf’s fire-rated boards and system specifications. The 9mm standard board typically does not carry the same fire resistance as thicker or specially formulated boards.
  5. Following these guidelines, the Knauf 9mm Gypsum Board can be installed efficiently to create clean, professional interior surfaces ready for painting, wallpapering, or any other decorative finish. Always refer to local building regulations and Knauf’s official technical data sheets for accurate information, ensuring a safe and code-compliant installation.
